The Esplanade, TORQUAY

Yea Ho, Little Fish…
Come all ye bold fishermen, listen to me;
I’ll sing you a song of the fish in the sea…

Manuel’s Love Song – Captain’s Courageous

ll hands on deck, Fisho’s is THE best fish and chippery in Torquay – make that on the Surf Coast. Fisho’s is no ordinary fish-and-chip experience. It’s more your five-star, high-end, healthy affair. But no need to don a bow tie or ball gown. This is a casual, family, Thongs ‘R’ Us thing, if you want it to be.

Bang in the middle of the Torquay-Esplanade eatery district, Fisho’s hosts the best of the best as far as location. This groovy little beach shack boasts an uninterrupted ocean vista from the garden front. And inside, in the winter months, there’s a cosy fire to warm the cockles. You can still see the sea from this vantage point, too. You may even be lucky enough to catch a rainbow – or two.

Fisho’s have hung onto the weatherboard beach house thing inside and out, and commendably use no plastic packaging. Food is served in funky cardboard boxes, and take-away is served in brown paper bags.

Fisho’s is fully licensed, so dip into the local wine, beer and cider. But not all at once!

The ceviche and tempura fish tacos are scrumptious – three to a box. Fisho’s seem to know what the little ones like, too, and do a cute little Kids Box. There are some great sides and salads. Love the sweet potato cakes, charred corn, and Mount Prospect skin-left-on chips. Go the Bells Box if you have a crowd to feed. Calamari is no hit-and-miss here. Fisho’s don’t do the rubbery stuff. It’s smashing.

Fisho’s source their catch from local suppliers, which is awesome, as everyone’s a winner here. The food is fresh-as, fast, hot and fabulous. Service is always smiley and patient. Takes a while to decide what to order first time up. But here’s betting it won’t be your last visit.

You can’t book or do the online order thing at Fisho’s. You’ll just have to rock up and see what everybody’s talking about on the best-of fish-and-chip front on the Surf Coast.

Sea shanty, sailor’s hornpipe, pirate-pumping ahoy to Fisho’s!

And be sure to check out Fisho’s new baby sister Olè Mexican Fiesta just ’round the corner – 5 Zeally Bay Road, Torquay.
