The Surf Coast’s Torquay NightJar Festival is up there with the most fun you’ll have this side of Timbuktu, and the Big Pineapple.

Yes-siree and yippee ay yo, every Thursday evening come January is officially party time in Torquay when the NightJar’s in town. But a word of warning – don’t let it put you off – 10,000-odd revellers and hungry people rock up to this one. A good time to practise a touch of pranayam and mindfulness while lining up for the manna from heaven on offer in the foodie stakes.

And not a bad idea, all things considered, to do the nursery tea thing and arrive early for eats. One of the best things about the NightJar Festival is that the gates open at 4pm. So if you have tiny people on board, arriving early is an option.

And why NightJar? The nightjar is a local owlet that lives near the ocean, and beside the riverbank at Spring Creek in Torquay. And this is where you’ll find the action – and plenty of it.

Famed local and emerging artists and designers showcase their wares along Australia Made Lane, Fairtrade Road, Artists Way and Designers Alley.

The littlies have the run of a magical children’s area, purpose-built just for them. All dress-ups and dancy-fancy or bare-foot and fancy-free.

The Maharaja’s teahouse, decorated in the tradition of a Rajasthan wedding tent, is the place to stop, rest – and, of course, drink tea.

Bring picnic rugs, fold-up chairs, maybe a cushion or two; find a place to stay for a time; put on your favourite dancing shoes; enjoy the local talent and international cuisine. And to be sure, to be sure, there’s not much you can’t taste test here, bar perhaps a chocolate-coated sardine.

Blackman’s Brewery of Torquay is the major sponsor of the NightJar Festival – there are two boutique bars. Feeling fruity and festivas? Try Spanish Gourmet Caterers secret family recipe Running Bull Sangria. Just so much to choose from here.

Oh, and no plastic unfantastic packaging and parcelling by stallholders and foodies permitted – ‘Super stuff, that’!
