01 Jan Surf Coast Walk – Jan Juc, Winkipop, Bells
POINT DANGER – JAN JUC – WINKIPOP – BELLS BEACH
Jan Juc, winkipop, Bells is My Surf Coast Life & Co’s most favourite walk – so far. Do it alone, if you’re after a touch of zen, mindfulness or meditation in motion. Or enlist your tribe.
Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and smile, smile, smile…
Or better still, take up the Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger, ‘We gonna walk, and don’t look back…’ thing.
Park at the Point Danger ANZAC memorial at the end of Bell Street. It’s a three-hour-at-most – depending on your stride – leisurely 12-kilometre wander of wonder. Grab a coffee at Third Wave Kiosk, Torquay Surf Beach, before take-off, heed the words of the Bush Doctor, and yep, ‘Don’t look back…’
You’ll come across some fantastic lookouts and photo opportunities along the way, so make sure you’re charged up in the camera department.
If the surf’s a’pumping, you’ll see some pretty snappy form at Jan Juc, Boobs, Steps, and Winkipop. Walk down to the Winkipop viewing platform. It’s SO worth it. And bang on next door, to Bells.
Track is safe and not too hilly. Certainly nothing treacherous about the terrain; and suitable for little pram on‑boarders and bikers. You can break the trek with a stop at Jan Juc’s Swell Cafe for some halfway sustenance. The Rock at Jan Juc’s good for it, too, but check opening hours for this one.
There’s a water fountain at the Steps stop-off. Pretty view, if you do the Steps descent. And you’ll find a wooden seal waiting to high five you at the bottom.
Walk the cliff trail from the Rocky Point lookout just off Torquay Surf Beach, or take the steps onto Jan Juc beach. The steps back up to the walking trail at the end of Jan Juc beach are more of a challenge, and not a goer for anyone on wheels.
Keep man’s best friend on a lead for this one. Once under the fenced-off no-go nature reserve restricted areas, and free to roam, Bruiser may be too close to cliff’s edge for comfort, and too distracted to heed a call from master control. Those pesky rabbits!
